Kyoto’s Arashiyama is a place that would be a shame to visit only for sightseeing.
After exploring famous spots such as the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Togetsukyo Bridge, the UNESCO World Heritage site Tenryu-ji Temple, and the Monkey Park, a relaxing onsen experience awaits to soothe your tired body after all the walking.
In this blog, I will introduce two recommended facilities.
Fufu no Yu
Fufu no Yu is a day-use hot spring facility, but its interior is designed like a traditional Japanese ryokan, allowing visitors to strongly feel the atmosphere of Japan and Kyoto.
Although it is located within walking distance of Arashiyama’s major sightseeing spots, it is usually not overly crowded, so you can enjoy a relaxing hot spring experience in a quiet and peaceful space.
Another advantage is that there are not many places around Arashiyama that stay open late at night. However, Fufu no Yu is open until the evening, making it a great option for a nighttime activity. Soaking in the outdoor bath under the night sky feels truly special, and it is hard to imagine a more relaxing way to end your day.
Recommended Itinerary
- Morning: Explore Arashiyama
It is recommended to visit Arashiyama early in the morning. Since there are fewer tourists at that time, you can walk through the bamboo grove at a relaxed pace. You can also hear the gentle sound of bamboo leaves rustling in the breeze, allowing you to truly feel the beauty of nature.

If you continue walking up the hill through the bamboo forest, you will reach the station for the scenic train. In spring, you can enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms, and in autumn, the colorful fall foliage makes it especially stunning, so it is highly recommended.

- Afternoon: Relax at an Onsen in Arashiyama
In the afternoon, visit Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The main attraction of Tenryu-ji is its artistic Japanese garden, which has extremely high historical and cultural value.

When heading to Togetsukyo Bridge on your way to Arashiyama Onsen Fufu no Yu, you will cross this famous bridge.
Taking photos on the bridge is beautiful, but it is also wonderful to capture the entire bridge in a photo like the one shown below. You can also sit by the river, listen to the gentle sound of the flowing water, and relax while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

After walking around these sightseeing spots, your legs are probably feeling tired. Why not relax and enjoy a soothing bath at Fufu no Yu?
Arashiyama Onsen Hanaikada
Arashiyama Onsen Hanaikada is one of the few ryokan in Arashiyama where you can enjoy a private day-use hot spring.
Some international visitors may feel uncomfortable with Japan’s unique bathing culture, where people bathe naked in public baths. For those who prefer more privacy, this facility is highly recommended.
You can also enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine for lunch. By walking around Arashiyama, getting some exercise, eating healthy Japanese food, and then warming your body in the hot spring to improve blood circulation, you can experience a wellness journey that is uniquely Arashiyama in Kyoto.
