If you enjoyed our previous article ranking the Top 5 hot springs and public baths in Kyoto, you may be wondering what comes next.
As a hot spring specialist, I selected the Top 5, but there are still many wonderful onsen and sento in Kyoto that didn’t quite make the list.
In this article, as a continuation of the ranking, I introduce Kyoto’s day-use hot springs and public baths ranked 6th to 10th.
Each facility has its own unique character and charm, including places beloved by locals and others that are easy to include in a sightseeing itinerary.
The reason these baths are ranked 6th to 10th is not due to their quality.
Some have restrictions on tattoos, while others are located slightly outside the city center or are less convenient to access.
Despite these factors, every facility featured here offers an excellent bathing experience.
If you’re looking to enjoy a deeper and more authentic Japanese bathing experience in Kyoto, this article is highly recommended.
Here is our blog featuring the Top 5 day-use hot springs and public baths in Kyoto.

Rating: ★★★⯨☆(19 stars total)
Bath Variety & Quality ★★★★★
Atmosphere & Authenticity ★★★★★
Comfort ★★★★★
Accessibility for Tourists ★★☆☆☆
Scenic Value / Surroundings ★★☆☆☆
The natural hot spring water at Genji-no-Yu flows from a depth of 1,111 meters underground and contains salt minerals similar to those found in seawater, which helps the body warm up effectively and retain heat.
The outdoor bathing area features both shallow and deep baths, traditional Shigaraki pottery tub baths, a cold water bath, and a sauna.
The hot spring water is mildly alkaline, a quality known for leaving the skin feeling smooth and refreshed after bathing.
Inside, the facility offers a high-concentration carbonated bath, which helps promote blood circulation.
The water temperature is kept at a comfortable 38°C (100°F), making it especially accessible and relaxing for international visitors who may be new to Japanese hot springs.
One drawback, however, is that guests with tattoos are not permitted to bathe at this facility.

- “Stone Bath” made with lava stone from Lake Kawaguchi, Mount Fuji
This bath is generously made with lava stone from the Lake Kawaguchi area near Mount Fuji.
The lava stone emits far-infrared heat, which gently warms the body from the inside and helps retain warmth long after bathing.
- “Wood Bath” made with hinoki cypress from Hida-Takayama
This is the largest bath at Makoto-no-Yu, generously crafted with hinoki cypress from Hida-Takayama.
Surrounded by the gentle, natural aroma of hinoki, guests can enjoy a deeply relaxing bathing experience.
The facility features two distinct bathing areas, which are alternated daily between men and women.
Each bathing area is equipped with an open-air bath, a sauna, and a cold water bath.
The open-air bath is one of Makoto-no-Yu’s highlights, featuring lava stone plates processed into tiles.
During the day, guests can relax while enjoying soft sunlight, and at night, soak under the open sky.
An outdoor relaxation area for cooling down after the sauna is also available, allowing visitors to enjoy a peaceful and refreshing “totonoi” moment in the quiet atmosphere of Shimabara.

The separate large public baths for men and women feature a mildly radioactive hot spring (radon onsen). This natural hot spring is known for relieving fatigue and easing shoulder stiffness, and it boasts one of the highest radium content levels in Japan. It is especially recommended for those suffering from neuralgia, joint pain, sensitivity to cold, gout, or arteriosclerosis.
