First of all, Funaoka Onsen is a truly charming and outstanding public bath, and one of Kyoto’s most iconic bathing facilities.
In fact, I have visited many times myself, and if asked whether it is a bath I would recommend, I would confidently answer, “Yes.”
However, Japanese hot springs and public bath have culturally unique aspects. For example, some people may feel uncomfortable bathing naked together with others.
With this in mind, this article explains who Funaoka Onsen may not be suitable for, due to differences in personal values and cultural expectations.

Conclusion: Who Funaoka Onsen Is Not Suitable For
Let me start with the conclusion.
Funaoka Onsen may not be the best choice for people who fall into the following categories:
- Those who are extremely sensitive about cleanliness
- Those who feel uncomfortable bathing naked with others
- Couples or married partners who want to bathe together
- People who care about hot spring water quality
Based on my personal experience of visiting Fufu no Yu many times, I will explain why it may not be suitable for these people.
Why It May Not Be Suitable: Reasons Based on Personal Experience
People Who Are Very Sensitive About Cleanliness
Funaoka Onsen is a historic bathing facility and a valuable cultural property of Kyoto. The interior decorations are beautifully preserved and highly regarded as works of art. At the same time, because of its long history, some parts of the building and facilities show signs of age. As a result, those who are particularly sensitive about hygiene may feel concerned.
That said, the facility is cleaned daily, and it is very well maintained overall. Visitors considering a trip can feel reassured about the general level of cleanliness.
People Who Feel Uncomfortable Bathing Naked with Others
At Funaoka Onsen, bathing is separated by gender, and guests share the same bath nude with others of the same gender.
This is not unique to Funaoka Onsen—most hot springs in Japan follow the same practice.
If you feel uncomfortable bathing nude, consider using a private bath or staying at a hotel with a private open-air bath in the guest room.
Couples or Married Partners Who Want to Bathe Together
At Funaoka onsen, bathing is separated by gender, so couples and married partners cannot bathe together.
This is not unique to Funaoka onsen—most hot spring facilities in Japan also have gender-separated baths.
However, Funaoka Onsen has shared spaces such as a relaxation area and a restaurant, so couples and married partners can still enjoy their time together outside the baths.
People who care about hot spring water quality
Funaoka Onsen does not technically qualify as a “hot spring” under Japan’s legal definition. However, it uses clean natural groundwater from beneath Kyoto, allowing visitors to enjoy a pleasant and refreshing bathing experience.
For those who place particular importance on the mineral composition of hot springs, it may not be the ideal choice. That said, it still offers a level of comfort and relaxation comparable to that of a genuine hot spring.

If none of the points mentioned above apply to you, your experience at Funaoka Onsen is likely to be highly satisfying.
If I were to recommend just one hot spring in Kyoto, Funaoka Onsen would be my top choice without hesitation.
Summary
To be clear, Funaoka Onsen is by no means a “bad” facility. On the contrary, it can easily be considered one of the best hot spring experiences in Kyoto.
At the same time, knowing in advance whether it matches your own preferences and goals can make your hot spring or sento experience in Kyoto much more satisfying.
