Hello, my name is Atsuki. I was born and raised in Kyoto, and I’ve visited many hot springs and public baths throughout the city. Based on my experiences, I would like to introduce some of the best onsen and sento in Kyoto.
Overall Rating for Gokō-yu
Total Rating: ★★★☆☆ (15 stars total)
Bath Variety & Quality ★★★☆☆

Bath Variety & Quality ★★★☆☆
Gokoyu is one of the public baths in Kyoto with the greatest variety of tubs. It offers a wide range of baths, including jet baths, electric baths, herbal baths, and a milky bath filled with fine microbubbles. With so many options, visitors can enjoy the experience without ever getting bored. The sauna area is also relatively spacious and very popular among local Japanese sauna enthusiasts.
Although there is no open-air bath, the windows inside the bathing area are often kept open, allowing guests to enjoy a refreshing “outdoor air” feeling after bathing. While Gokoyu is a sento and not a natural hot spring, many of the tubs contain raw radium ore stones, providing an experience similar to radium hot springs. Public baths using natural radium ore are extremely rare even across Japan.
The slightly lower rating comes from the fact that many of the baths are quite hot, making it difficult to stay in for long. The temperature is likely around 43°C. Since the most comfortable range for soaking is usually around 38–40°C, you can imagine why some visitors may find the water too hot.

Atmosphere & Authenticity ★★★☆☆
The interior is relatively simple and has the nostalgic atmosphere of a traditional Japanese sento. Since many local residents still use the bathhouse regularly, visitors can get a sense of Japan’s bathing culture and long-standing traditions.
However, because the facility is built inside an ordinary building, the interior design is not particularly distinctive or decorative. The bathing area is not very spacious, so you won’t feel much openness. The absence of an outdoor bath is also due to the building’s structure and the fact that residential houses are located right next to it.
Comfort ★★☆☆☆
There is also a small dining area, which is convenient for visitors who want a light snack. For sauna lovers, chairs are available for cooling down and enjoying the outdoor-air feeling after sweating in the sauna.
Because Gokoyu is a very popular public bath, it can become quite crowded depending on the time of day—especially the sauna area. The crowding can make it a bit difficult to fully relax, which is a downside. Additionally, since the baths are divided between the first and second floors, be careful not to slip on the stairs when moving between levels.

Accessibility for Tourists ★★★★☆
Gokoyu is conveniently located with easy access from Kyoto Station. Taking a bus from Kyoto Station is the most efficient way to reach the bathhouse.
There are many guesthouses and hotels in the surrounding area, and it is often used by travelers staying nearby. For those who want to keep accommodation costs low, staying in this neighborhood is a good option. It also provides convenient access to major sightseeing spots such as Kiyomizu-dera and Arashiyama.
Scenic Value / Surroundings ★★★☆☆
The surrounding area is an old-fashioned residential neighborhood, so it doesn’t have the lively atmosphere typical of tourist spots. However, this makes it an ideal place to experience a “true local sento” that blends into everyday Kyoto life. Although it isn’t a sightseeing destination, a short stroll around the area lets you enjoy the traditional, down-to-earth side of Kyoto. Rather than scenic beauty, the appeal lies in its authentic, local atmosphere.
