When choosing a relaxing hot springs in Kyoto, I look for facilities that are well-equipped, surrounded by nature, and not crowded.
For those who love hot springs, I highly recommend visiting the hot springs introduced below.
1st Place: Kurama Onsen
Kurama Onsen, located in the Kurama–Kibune area of Kyoto, offers a traditional Japanese hot spring experience where you can quietly soak in natural surroundings. It is my top recommendation among all the hot springs in Kyoto.
Surrounded by nature, the open-air baths offer magnificent views, providing a calm and relaxing experience away from the busy city.
Because access is a bit limited, there are usually fewer visitors, and sometimes the rest area feels almost like a private space.
The on-site restaurant also takes great care with its cuisine, offering delicious meals.
I recommend enjoying multiple baths throughout your visit, taking breaks for meals or to relax in the rest area, to fully unwind.
Kurama Mountain offers hiking opportunities and is also known as a spiritual power spot. After a hike, soaking in the hot spring, warming your body in the open-air bath, and then cooling off in the mountain air is truly an exceptional experience.

2nd Place: Rurikei Onsen
The facility features spacious indoor baths, outdoor baths, open-air areas surrounded by nature, well-equipped relaxation areas, saunas, and rock baths, providing an environment where you can spend long, leisurely hours.
There is also a mixed-gender swimsuit area, allowing families and friends to enjoy the hot springs together.
The paid relaxation rooms are extremely comfortable, and I recommend paying the extra fee if you want to fully unwind. There is also a restaurant with a wide variety of dishes, so you are sure to find something you like.
The facility is located in a natural, mountainous setting, offering beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. With hiking trails available, it is an ideal location for those who enjoy nature and outdoor activities.
However, the facility can get crowded on weekends, so it’s best to visit on weekdays.

3rd Place: Manyo-no-Yu
Manyo-no-Yu is a rare facility even in Japan, offering two different types of natural hot springs. The facility has a total of nine different baths, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the hot springs at their own pace. Relaxation facilities such as rest areas and reclining chairs are well-equipped, making it one of the most comfortable hot spring experiences in Kyoto.
It feels especially good to take multiple baths while taking breaks to rest in between.
The restaurant offers a wide variety of menu options, so you can enjoy a beer, a soft drink, or a full lunch or dinner after your soak.
There is also a bamboo grove nearby, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely walk.
